Z1R Metmachex swing arm

#1 PostAuthor: SuffolkZ1r » Sat Sep 09, 2023 7:22 am

Hi guys.
Going to potentially purchase a Metmachex swing arm for my Z1R later today. It has stamped on the pivot area Z1000, any of you guys know for sure this will fit ok without any mods?
Thanks in advance.

All Z1 through to Z1000MK2 are the same at the swingarm pivot so it will fit the frame and as long as the torque arm mount is on the top of the arm it will do the job.

Might be a bit late to this - you've probably either got it or not by now! Anyway, here's a piccy of my Z1R complete with Metmachex - and yes, it's stamped Z1000. Of note - the torque arm off the original arm didn't fit the mounting on the new one (the casting is too wide to fit into the 'fork' of the torque arm). A chunky piece of flat bar sized to the same length makes a good substitute (or has done for the last 15 years or so :) ) - just make sure it's beefy enough not to flex if you use the back brake hard.

Thanks for your reply on this.
Lovely bike you have as well…
Yes, I have the swing arm now and was pondering over getting it as it hasn’t got the spindle included and also one of the bearing end covers/caps was missing? However she knocked another £25 off so hopefully I can get another spindle to work, needs to be a bit longer than the original Z1R spindle and it should have a like woodruff key to lock into one side of the accentric system?
It is also Stamped Z 1 9 and not Z1000 as I first thought.
Luckily, it had a torque arm fitted which is quite substantial and hopefully will do the trick..
Thanks again

No probs; I've had the bike 30-odd years - it's substantially less than standard (and still a work in progress :D ) - but we still get about a bit. The spindle has the 'woodruff key' machined onto the LH end, so it's not a separate part - the idea being that as you rotate the eccentrics they both move in beautiful harmony. In practice it's not always brilliant and can take a bit of jiggery-pokery to get the wheel square. Call me OCD, but I've been known to measure the angle of the two allen bolts on each side relative to the horizontal to make sure it's bang on... :hah! Metmachex are still a going concern - maybe a call to them will see a spare spindle gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.

Thanks again for your help.
Great that you’ve had yours for 30+ years , wish I never sold my old one I had in 83..
Yes I did in fact do some research on the spindle and I don’t think it is imperative to get one that has the woodruff machined on maybe just a plain one? I think I should be able to align the wheel like you say with measuring the Allen key bolts with angle? I’m I will call Metmachex on Monday just in case they have one but I thought they ceased trading a few years ago? This arm looks different to yours as it has the drop down braced cradle bit under the arm, they must do a couple of types? Cheers

Yes, reckon a plain spindle will be OK if you can find one with the right dimensions. Just a thought - you could build up a key on a different spindle with liquid metal or somesuch - it's not doing anything structural, just allowing you to rotate the LH eccentric so any sort of raised bit that fits into the slot should work. After that you can use a socket/spanner on the RH spindle nut to rotate that to roughly the right position and fine tune from there.

Metmachex are still around (I think), just that they don't made arms any more. Nothing ventured etc. When I bought mine I had the option of braced or unbraced, so yes two different sorts but to all intents and purposes the same.

Yes, indeed I could just use some Liquid Metal instead, thanks for that idea.
Have been having a little search online for spindles that are about 330mm long , 20mm diameter and approximately 16mm threaded ends and it’s a bit of a minefield !! Metmachex do list them for £75 which is a bit steep but will give them a call anyway as could do with some new decals as well.
Cheers
