Kawasaki Z900 and other models, brake fail module

#1 PostAuthor: Gray17 » Tue Apr 25, 2023 9:09 am

Hi Guys, like to share some info with you.
Whilst carrying out my resto, i noticed a 3 pin connector under the tank that had nothing connected. I traced this to the Brake light Fail module, which basically monitors the brake light bulb, when normal lights up a lamp on idiot panel when pressing the front or rear brake, however if the bulb fails to light, the idiot light flashes to warn you of the failure. Seems like a good idea. The same module is used on many japanese models not just Kawasaki.
I Had a look for 1 in all the usual places Zpower, Ebay etc very few available and usually from US so costly. It would appear they are afixed to a bracket near the coils, because of heat, vibration etc the mounting fails allowing the unit to flop about and go bad, hence why lots are removed.
Anyway i stumbled upon a circuit for this using a handful of electronic components so you could make up your own, if your that way inclined

Parts needed
1. Transistor BC558B
2. Mosfet BUZ11
3. Capacitor 10uf 16v or 25v
4. Resistors 1/4w 100, 2x 22k, 27k, 220k, 470k, 100k
5. Piece of veroboard
6. Project plastic box
Total price for all components about £12 but you do get 10 each of resistors. So may have a go if cant get one fully built.
Anyway thought I'd share it so any budding electronics gurus can comment, or indeed if they've already built one.

Check ebay Germany Graham. Often on there for a tenner plus a bit of p&p. Cheap and small so through the post no import gets levied.
I've got a few nos ones in my stash as just in case spares.

Already been there and done that.

The prices you have quoted look a little light to me having made a quantity of these.

I made 10 for economies of scale but the correct connectors, correct coloured wiring and the potting compound bump up the cost.

I also used slightly higher wattage resistors as a belt and braces approach which does make the finished unit slightly larger than the original.

These units fit most Kawasaki’s with the brake failure system as well as some early Yamahas.

I have 7 left if anyone needs one at £30 each plus postage. This figure covers the cost of all materials plus a small labour charge.

Thanks for replies guys, Warren i have checked German ebay, only one came up is the one thats in UK,guess you have to keep checking at £10ish that cheaper then i can buy bits, hes sent me an offer for it, alao Kawasaki Heaven has several, he too has sent me an offer, but of course their used not new, and from Z650 so you never know how long they will work, hence post.
R3sc yours look very proffesional, probably a lot better then i can make, the estimate was based on ebay parts prices for conponents, in the old days id have got them from Farnells or RS but dont have account now, so may have been cheaper, i also didnt price in veroboard or plastic case as have these already. Nor the correct connector like yours.
At the moment im going to hang fire, got a lot on just trying to get bike back together, costs gone through the roof already.
But will bare yours in mind, if i dont get around to building one myself, good to know their available.
Thanks

Hi Grey,

No probs at all. I made them a couple of years ago and never thought anything about them until I saw your post.

I’m sure they’ll come in handy at some point.

Good luck with your resto.

Cheers

Pete.
