I've got a 1000j engine here with a Gpz1100A / Unitrac inlet cam and standard 1000j exhaust cam. Motor is otherwise fairly standard. The cam sprockets have been slotted and cam timing was way off when checked - compression was very low.
I've reset cam timing "by eye/experience" to more or less standard and now have reasonable compression.
So my question is:
IS THERE ANY REASON WHY NOT TO USE STANDARD - UN SLOTTED "J" CAM SPROCKETS with standard 110 Deg LC's ????
Its just a "runner" and not a "racer" and doing away with the slotted sprockets will surely keep it more simple in future !
All help / advice appreciated.
N.B. I thought I'd leave the 1100 inlet cam in to save replacing the inlet with standard / doing the shims - just lazy !!

Yes! All aircooled Z900 through to GPZ1100 unitrack use 110 degree lobe centers from the factory.

Re: 1000j engine cam timing / cam sprockets
Thanks zed1015 - thats what I hoped to hear. I'm guessing I'll loose a few points of CR with the longer duration on the overlap with the Unitrac inlet cam... but with modern petrol I doubt this will be a bad thing anyway ! I'm relatively new with these "modern" j type engines so thanks for the prompt reply. I'm wondering why somebody went to the trouble of slotting the cam wheels but I know it's just what you get with 40 year old engines ..... who knows the history - these cams could just as easily have been lifted out of some other engine ....
Re: 1000j engine cam timing / cam sprockets
Even a new factory engine may not be spot on with the cam timing due to manufacturing tolerances.
Degreeing in the cams to "blueprint" the timing is why the slotted sprockets may have been used on a stock motor.
Also they can be used to compensate for camchain wear or to open or close the lobe centers to move the power up or down the rev range which can be beneficieal even on a stock engine.
