Play in rear wheel cush drive

I’ve just rebuilt the rear wheel with new bearings and a sprocket. I looked at the cush drive when I rebuilt the wheel and it looked OK, with no evidence of wear or rubber particles in the sprocket carrier. However, when I put the wheel back in the bike, there seems to be about 3-5mm of rotary play in the carrier when I turn the wheel.

I did not check this before I disassembled the wheel, so I’m not sure if this is too much play, or is normal. I can’t find anything in the manuals to tell me whether there should be any play at all. Does anyone have any advice or guidance on what is normal, before I decide to strip it down again!

Thanks in anticipation.

A new cush drive has zero play in it. You can get a new cush drive from the usual suspects or cheap out by cutting an old inner tube up and folding it around the drive plate prongs/pillars to take up the "gap".

Ol skool Bush engineering. Works fine though and can't be seen so if penny's count and your not planning on selling why not?
