Piston Ring Confusion

I've currently got the top end of my 900 A4 stripped down as it was smoking under high revs (6K plus) and it was oil burning. I am struggling to find anything wrong. It was refurbed about 3000 miles ago before I got it, with documented new valves, valve guides, viton seals, rings etc. Everything looks to be in order with the honing marks clearly visible in the liners.
The only thing that seems a possible issue is the way the rings are fitted, Both the top ring and the second ring have the letter N on one edge and both have been fitted with the letter uppermost ( as stated in the workshop manual). However, this means that the notch in the 2nd ring is now at the top ,when the manual shows it fitted with the notch facing downwards ??
Can someone confirm the right way round for the rings and whether this might cause the oil burning issue ?
