Kick start not returning and when turning over on starter kickstart spins down

Hi this is on a rebuilt z1B engine if I use kickstart it stays down and does not return if I spin motor over on starter spins the kickstart down what have I not done or buggered up

did you put the spring in the correct place? The long pin in the hole between the cranckcases and the smaller pin in the kickstarter shaft?
If you didn't the engine will only turn until the inside of the shaft hits the stop inside the cranckcase.

The kickstart return spring is most likely not located correctly.

The spring goes into a hole in the casing and the other end into the shaft that’s what I’ve done and turned it clockwise to tension it.
When I spin the starter flies down until stops against footrest almost as of its working backwards.

The reason it's flying backwards is because the kickstart gear is still engaged a tooth .
The kickstart spring needs to be tensioned anti clockwise for it to push the kickstart pawl clockwise against it's stop and out of engagement.

The z1 service manual page 46 says turn the kick shaft fully clock wise before engaging the spring?

I suppose turning the kickstart shaft clockwise is the same as tensioning the spring anticlockwise

All sorted now disengaged spring wound clockwise as far as the shaft would go reinserted spring now all fine
