Speedometer query

Hi All,
Dug out my clock set from storage, been there about 15 years. Noticed that the needle/pointer centre appeared to have what I thought was oil accumulated on it. Stripped it all apart, not oil, but a very sticky, clear substance. haven't touched it yet as I don't want to make it look worse. Two things, does anyone have any idea what this might be, and if so, any tips on safely removing it (non solvent I would imagine).

Bike is Z1000J3, same style clocks as fitted to Z1000R, Z1100R etc. Connected cable to a drill, worked normally up to indicate 80mph, held steady, then dropped as expected.
Thanks

If it's been stored face down then it's probably the needle damping fluid that's run out which I think is glycerol. It will need attention as without the fluid the needle will bounce.

Hi redzee

as wilsonjw11 said: probably the needle damping fluid.
NEVER store meters face down, always up!

Thanks Guys,

That crossed my mind, but as stated, I've run speedo repeatedly with a drill and it seems ok. I'm' just going to clean it off and see how it goes. Should it fail, does anyone know how to rectify the problem? Also, what is the safest product to clean glycerol off?
Cheers

Hi.
Had some issues with the Tacho and Speedo in my Kawa S2. Lack of damping may not show up straight away on a short ride but on longish ones it should become more noticable.
Try to limit the fluids spread as much as possibe. Effective cleaning can be done with an alcohol wipe. What ever you use check it out first incase it attacks any clock painwork. Quite a bit of speedo disassemble needs to be done to get to the damper pot behind the face. Application of of the replacement oil can be done with a syringe. I used CORE-RC 30000 cSt silicone oil.
