Am now checking my valve clearances and need some one to check out these sizes who knows what there doing please
Number 1 Exhaust 270 shim gap 4 thou
Number 2 Exhaust 275 shim gap 3.5 thou
Number 3 Exhaust 270 shim gap 3 thou
Number 4 Exhaust 270 shim gap 4 thou
Number 1 inlet 265 shim gap 7 thou
Number 2 inlet 275 shim gap 6 thou
Number 3 inlet 270 shim gap 7 thou
Number 4 inlet 270shim gap 5 thou
Am I right in thinking all exhausts Ok
But Number 1 inlet needs changing to 275
Number 2 inlet needs changing to 285
Number 3 inlet needs changing to 280
Number 4 inlet needs changing to 275
If so I have the 275 x 2 just need a 280 & 285 and does the club do a loaner of the Kawasaki shim removing tool and who do I need to ask

All the exhausts are too tight or on minimum clearances.
Inlets are mid to maximum.
4 thou is minimum so you really need 6 thou across the board.
A little wider at 7 thou is ok as they will close up once run and the valves settle.
You should really be measuring in fractions of a millimeters not inches.
Minimum clearance is 0.10 mm ( 3.9 thou ) and max by the book is 0.15mm ( 6 thou).
You should set all the clearances as close to 0.15 mm as possible ( a little wider at 0.17mm is ok if that's where the next shim size takes you.
Never shim at 0.10mm as you are on the minimum from the get go and they will soon close up and you risk burning valves etc.

The clearance on the early Z1's was first specified at 0.05mm to 0.10mm but was quickly amended due to instances of valve burning, especially on the exhausts.
The amended figures are 0.10mm to 0.15mm and should be kept as close to the high end as possible when re-shimming.
If you have clearance of 0.11mm - 0.12mm it's best to go with the next thinner shim and a clearance of 0.16mm to 0.17mm etc .
Either that or re-check and re shim after the bikes been run a few miles as the valve train will settle and the clearances will close up especially when the seats and valves etc have been re-cut.

Will try and remeasusure with some decent metric feller gauges and get gaps as close to 0.15mm

After changing some of the shims are these readings OK
Number 1 Exhaust 0.16mm
Number 2 Exhaust 0.135mm
Number 3 Exhaust 0.13mm
Number 4 Exhaust 0.135mm

These values cant be correct 160mm is half a 12"ruler thats bigger then the valve?, are you sure youve measured the gaps they should be 0.15mm ish as previously stated.

They look a lot better now, all are within tollerence, however some are fairly close, it just means after youve run the bike for a 1000 miles or so they will need re checking as they tend to shrink once fully bedded in. Hence why it was suggested keep them at the widest permitred limit or upto 0.17mm to allow for the close up once run.
