Am rebuilding a Z1B engine am fitting a new Kawasaki genuine part cam chain have noticed the old chain has 2 white paint marks on it should I transfer the distance of these onto the new chain before fitting it to the crankshaft
Excuse my stupidity but all my previous engine work has been on 2 strokes

The simple answer is no.
Marking the chains 28 pin count will be meaningless until the new chain is fitted.

Dont bother, these are marked when setting your own, 28 teeth from timing mark to timing mark. you will have to do all this your self later.

No such thing as a stupid question mate, better be 100% in the know when it comes to engine building, so ask away.

Actually 29 pins from mark to mark to keep it simple and avoid Kawa's devious plan for the unwary who don't fully read the instructions

yes - that's caught me out a few times. The diagram only helps a bit. The timing mark points to pin ZERO and you count from there. If you call the pin next to the mark pin 1 then you'll be wrong and the inlet cam will be a pin out
I think the paint marks were for the original factory assembly and were completely irrelevant after that

The reason i said teeth and not pins is i have always counted the gaps (where the teeth would be) and not the pins, 28 teeth between 29 pins. Sorrry for being pedantic.
