Cylinder head mystery

Hello All,
Another strange occurrence...
I've just had my Z900 head refurbished and the engineering company I'm took a 0.006" skim of the face which revealed a pattern of dots.
When tested these were found to be magnetic so are possible an array of twisted steel wires - perhaps something like a mesh former that was accidently left in the mould.
There is nothing else magnetic in the head (I checked the other side as well) other than the valve seats.
Once again I would appreciate it if anyone can cast any light on this.
