Get a paint stripper hot air gun on filler and it just crumbles and is easy to get out. It'll even be easy to get out the badge threads. Alternatively halfrauds do small thin strips of number plate double sided. Sticky as a sticky thing and will hold tank badges on permanently easily.
Think the black one would be my choice though because it's the right tap fitting. If your going to see it take a magnet with you to check for filled dents.

Thanks Warren, sounds like good advice. Thats something i could do myself before taking to painter which saves his time, my only concern would be if it uncovers any more problems that the filler was covering, if i go down that route i will take a magnet to check.
Course even then because of age you dont know if they leak or not, thats trouble with really old parts, truth is its pot luck!
Thanks

Everything can be fixed.
This tank looked fine on a project I bought. Getting another J tank is next to impossible so no option but fix it.

Just depends on how motivated you are.

On the plus side - the tanks in the 70's were made of better quality steel than the later models. All Z1, Z900, and Z1000 will fit a Z900A4.
This is a Z1 tank on my modified bitza Z1000A2

Gray17 wrote:Yes that seems to be general consensus, it does look very similar to A4 and will obv fit the frame, its just the tap only having 1 outlet, whereas mine has twin, which feeds each pair of carbs, guess you could use a Y piece but not sure if you would get sufficient flow to carbs?
by the sound of it you have later carbs as there should only be one inlet, you may need to find a different fueltap gpz1100 b1 b2 or unitrak or z1r z1000j I had the same issue ltd tank and zir carbs

Whats the significance between the threaded fuel tap and the bolt on tap, are they both A4 tanks or is one an earlier type or are both ok, diff manufacture?
They are but you will get a perfect tank ready to paint.
A reasonable condition used tank will cost at least £250. and will no doubt have internal rusting which will need attention.

Bolted fuel taps first fitted to Z1000A2 1978. Not really a problem as you can buy a PINGEL adaptor plate to take the threaded earlier fuel taps.

Re: What other fuel tanks fit Z900 A4?
Great info guys and very useful, just need a suitable tank now!
Incidentally notice the plate has a female thread whereas tank normally has male thread, do you fit a nipple to it or threaded pipe etc to convert it?
Thanks to all
