Z900 A4 cam timing

#1 PostAuthor: Gray17 » Wed Mar 22, 2023 3:32 pm

Good afternoon guys, i hope someone can shed some light on this and im not being stupid?
So im in the middle of an engine rebuild, got everything ready for re fitting the camshafts. Head torqued down and new gaskets fitted. The engine is set to 1 and 4 TDC and the mark is allighned. Now according to the workshop manual it tells you to allign the mark of the exhaust camshaft 1st so the furthest bolt away faces forward and level with the front cam casing, the 2 close bolts
face rearwards as per the picture in workshop manual, however the only mark i can see is on the rubber and is 90 deg away ie straight up and down? You then count 28 segments to the inlet cam which also aligns with furthest bolt facing rearwards but again theres no mark other then the no.28 on the cam. At this point i assume both bolts should be diagonally opposite each other but aligned with the casing.
But both manuals say a mark i dont see the bolts as a mark?
When I've done timing before theres distinct lines the align together on the cam casings and cams or cam sprockets, on this there isnt?
Suggestions please?
Thanks

The marks are very faint!

The exhaust mark ( a small arrow) is stamped on the actual steel sprocket .
The inlet mark is the "28".
Make sure you count the pin that is level with the arrow as ZERO and count to 28 from the next pin above or the engine will run gutless.
Kawasaki could have just said count 29 pins from the arrow to avoid confusion.

Thanks for the info guys, thats the diagram i was using in the manual, as i said when youre doing other models they have pronounced lines to show they are timing marks, obv not Kawasaki yet they do have pronounced marks bur on the rubber not sure what these are for but would have made more sense to utilise these rather then a small stamp on cog, maybe more indication they want dealers to do the work.
I will re check the chain count to ensure its 28+(29)
Im slowly getting there! even the head gasket didnt have up on it to indicate which side is which so guess eithers fine? The kit came with 2 piece split gasket, rather then the sngle piece item shown in the manual, wonder why they changed it?
Def not the easiest engine to work on thats for sure!!!!
