Engine case pitting

#1 PostAuthor: Peteypops23 » Sat Dec 31, 2022 1:17 pm

Guys,
just a quick enquiry.....
Is it possible to repair pitted engine cases? Mainly forward faces.

Elbow grease or alloy filler or what?
Or are they scrap?
Cheers,
Pete

I'm no expert but with the small bit of polishing I have done, depending on accessibility around the lump, course mop head and rouge working back to finer until you get a satisfactory finish. If it's really bad in places you might need something a bit more aggressive, possibly fine flap wheel or M3 scotchbrite pads on a die grinder. I'm sure others here will advise better. But I'm thinking no short cut here just elbow grease.

Certainly not scrap if they are physically sound and even then almost anything can be repaired.
If you want rid of the pitting for a smooth alloy finish then the only choice is to sand it back.
Once smooth though you will need to employ a few techiques to resemble a cast surface.
The other alternative is to make sure it's totally clear of oxide and paint it black with Simoniz satin.
That will fill and hide the pitting and last for years.
